Fear has engulfed residents of Mkwiro village in Wasini Island in Lungalunga, Kwale County after rising sea levels submerged the graves of their loved ones.
The residents attribute the occurrence to the adverse effects of climate change.
Mshemanga Hamisi, a resident, says the raging water will likely wash away the graves on dry land.
“We are concerned about losing the graves of our loved ones after the area began eroding due to its proximity to the ocean,” he said.
According to Hamisi the rising sea levels are affecting the area.

He said that some old graves were swept off to the sea recently.
He called on the government to intervene by erecting a sea wall that would block the rising water from impinging the island.
“We need more manpower. Our efforts to have a wall built have so far not yielded any results,” he lamented.
Residents say that their efforts to request the wall have hit a snag even after writing numerous proposals to have it constructed.
