At least 50 women from Mombasa and Kwale counties have successfully completed training in Financial Literacy and Business Management skills.

The training, organized under the Empower Her program, was sponsored by Base Titanium in collaboration with the Taji Langu Foundation.

The three-month initiative aimed to empower small-scale women entrepreneurs by equipping them with essential business skills.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani praised the program, describing it as a transformative initiative that will positively impact the lives of women in the region.

She said that many women have been struggling to make ends meet due to a lack of essential business management skills.

“We have so many talented and dedicated women, but their businesses often fail because they lack the necessary knowledge to manage and sustain them,” she said.

Achani said that the program aligns with the county’s vision of empowering women, fostering financial stability, and enhancing their resilience.

She said that the skills are crucial for not only transforming the lives of women but also boosting the overall economy.

Achani noted that the county has supported over 300 women’s groups by transforming them into companies, which are now benefiting from various county and national government tenders.

She encouraged more women to register their businesses as companies, enabling them to collaborate effectively with the county government and enhance their growth opportunities.

The governor also urged the women to make good use of the skills they had acquired to improve their lives and livelihoods.

She added that such opportunities are rare and encouraged the participants to seize the moment to grow and promote their businesses.

Achani advised women to support one another and view challenges as stepping stones to success.

“Challenges are inevitable, but they should not weaken you, they should make you stronger,” she said.

The county boss acknowledged that women face numerous obstacles but emphasized the importance of determination and courage in achieving their goals.

She reminded the women that nothing comes on a silver platter and told them not to underestimate their potential.

Achani affirmed that the county government will continue to support women and create a conducive environment for them to thrive in all aspects of life.

Base Titanium’s Community Programs Manager, Mwanaharusi Hamisi, said that the support reflects the company’s commitment to empowering communities and improving livelihoods.

She noted that although the company is winding down its operations, it remains committed to fulfilling its corporate social responsibility and ensuring that its community empowerment programs continue beyond the mining activities.

Hamisi explained that the women were selected through a rigorous process.

She said in addition to business skills, they were equipped with self-esteem and given guidance on prioritizing their interests and improving their lives.

Hamisi urged the women to share the knowledge they gained with their colleagues who were not part of the program.

She said that sharing the skills will foster the overall growth of women and inspire others to achieve success.

Hamisi stressed that the graduation should not mark the end of their learning but rather encourage them to continue applying their skills and seeking new knowledge to improve their businesses and living standards.

“Now that you are graduating, you should not just keep the certificates under your pillows but make good use of them to transform your lives,” she said.

Founder of Taji Langu Foundation Mwanahamisi Hamadi said the initiative seeks to boost women’s small-scale businesses across the country by providing essential resources and training.

The foundation’s mission is to identify and empower women entrepreneurs, especially those in rural and underserved areas, helping them expand their businesses and achieve financial independence.

Hamadi said they aim to create a supportive environment where women can thrive in the business world.

She said that women are faced by numerous challenges such as limited access to capital, market opportunities, and business development knowledge, and hence the need to bridge the gaps.

“Through mentorship programs, workshops on business management, and facilitating access to microloans, the Taji Langu Foundation is helping women enhance their skills and increase their market reach,” she said.

Hamadi said that the NGO will continue to closely monitor the progress of the women involved in the initiative, ensuring they receive the necessary support to achieve success.

She said that the foundation is committed to empowering women to not only combat poverty but also enhance their financial stability, paving the way for long-term economic independence.
