Kwale County government has launched the construction of the Mlalo water pan in Vanga Ward, Lungalunga Sub-county.
The water pan is aimed to enhance water storage capacity and ensure a reliable supply for domestic use, irrigation, and livestock during dry seasons.
It will help mitigate the effects of drought and improve water accessibility for the residents.
The project is jointly funded by the national treasury under Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLOCA), and county government through the Department of Lands, Environment and Natural Resources.
Speaking during the launch Kwale governor Fatuma Achani noted that lack of water has been a significant challenge for residents and reaffirmed her commitment to providing clean and safe water for both domestic and irrigation use.
“The main problem facing our people is lack of water, I assure all Kwale residents that we will allocate resources to mitigate this issue through the construction of dams, water pans and sinking boreholes among other measures, ” said Achani.
The initiative is part of a broader water security strategy to enhance sustainable water management in Kwale County.
Vanga ward MCA Yusuf Mbwana echoed the governor’s sentiments and pledged his support for the project.
Nadzua Ndegwa, a resident, noted that residents and livestock will have improved access to clean water, reducing the long distances they travel in search of water.
The project will be completed after three months.
