Residents of Kinondo in Kwale County, have raised concerns over the rising cases of youth crime and land disputes, saying these challenges threaten peace in the community.
This comes as Village Voices, with support from We World, implements a peace-building project in the area to address the challenges.
Speaking after a community dialogue forum, the organization’s chief officer, Daniel Mbogo, said that the initiative, which brings together various stakeholders, is one of the ways to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the community.
“We are looking at how people can come together and talk. We have engaged village elders so they can discuss their challenges. This project will also bring the youth together so that we can understand their concerns,” said Mbogo.

Crime cases have been on the rise in the area, with many residents fearing the situation could worsen if a solution is not found.
Land disputes, mainly involving squatters, have also increased, with locals decrying cases of land grabbing.
On his part, Village Voices project coordinator Salim Mnyenze said the organization is working to identify and rehabilitate morally wayward youth by equipping them with skills for self-reliance.
“We will bring them together in groups and provide them with training. This will help them find alternative ways to earn a living and become self-sufficient,” said Mnyenze.

Community activist Riziki Mohammed, who focuses on youth affairs, emphasized the need for parents to be involved in these discussions, arguing that many fail to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing.
She blamed parental neglect for the growing insecurity, stating that children who lack proper guidance often end up joining criminal gangs.
“Parents should be engaged, take up their responsibilities, and understand what is disrupting their children’s peace,” said Mohammed.
