Residents of Kombani in Kwale County are living in fear following a spike in robbery incidents, some occurring in broad daylight.
The growing insecurity has prompted Governor Fatuma Achani to call on security agencies to intensify patrols and dismantle criminal gangs destabilizing the area.
“The security forces in Kombani must act urgently. People are being robbed both at night and during the day,” said Governor Achani. “We need enhanced security so that residents can live in peace.”
She noted that Kombani is one of Kwale’s fastest-growing urban centers and that the county government is investing heavily in infrastructure projects, including the opening of access roads, to elevate the town’s status and attract investment.
“We are working to open roads and improve Kombani’s infrastructure. But if insecurity persists, it will scare away potential investors,” she added.
In the nearby village of Bowa, residents have reported multiple thefts in recent weeks. In one recent case, unidentified individuals stole metallic fittings used to connect water pipes from a borehole, disrupting water supply to households.
The growing wave of insecurity has drawn the attention of the Matuga Sub-County security team, which has issued a stern warning to suspected youth gangs involved in the crimes.
Deputy Sub-County Police Commander Alex Chepsoi confirmed the reports, saying the police are pursuing leads and have launched targeted operations to arrest those behind the thefts.
“We are aware of the situation and have initiated crackdowns. I urge residents to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspects. This way, we can act swiftly to ensure everyone enjoys peace and security,” said Chepsoi.

Chepsoi also warned residents against organizing night celebrations without official clearance, noting that such gatherings have been exploited by criminals.
“Some of these events become safe havens for criminals. We won’t tolerate that. Anyone found violating the law will be arrested. Weddings and similar celebrations must comply with legal procedures and time limits,” he stated.
Kombani’s strategic location along the Mombasa–Lunga Lunga highway has made it a magnet for commercial expansion. However, community leaders warn that unless the crime wave is contained, progress could be reversed and residents’ lives further endangered.
