With erratic rainfall and recurring droughts threatening harvests across Kenya, farmers are increasingly turning to climate-smart maize varieties such as DK777 to safeguard their yields.
The improved seed variety is fast-maturing, drought-tolerant, and designed to help smallholder farmers maintain reliable production even under harsh climatic conditions.
This shift aligns with Kenya’s National Food and Nutrition Security Policy, which promotes modern agricultural technologies, improved seed adoption, and sustainable farming practices to enhance food availability and reduce vulnerability to hunger.
“DK777 matures in just two-and-a-half to three months, making it ideal for areas with unpredictable rainfall. Using certified seeds is the first step toward high productivity and food security,” said David Muchiru, Retailer Relationship Manager at Bayer East Africa Limited, during a promotional event at Atlas Agrovet in Ukunda, Kwale County.
To curb counterfeit inputs, farmers can verify the authenticity of DK777 seeds by scratching the KEPHIS sticker, sending the serial number to 1393, and receiving confirmation via SMS. Verified purchases also qualify farmers for a national promotional draw, with winners receiving farm inputs.
According to Muchiru, farmers using DK777 can harvest between 40 to 45 bags of maize per acre, compared to 28 to 34 bags from other varieties such as DK8033. “Certified seeds not only boost household food supply but also create opportunities for surplus sales,” he added.

Farmers in Kwale County say the seeds are already transforming their livelihoods.
Jackson Chakaya, a smallholder farmer from Mbegani village, reported improved yields and increased income.
“DK seeds have performed much better than the varieties I used before. I now produce enough for my family and still have surplus to sell. I urge other farmers to try them this season,” he said.
In Mwapala village, farmer Abdallah Juma Chengo said he abandoned previous varieties, including PH1, PH4, and local seeds, due to poor performance.
“Since switching to DK seeds, my crop is thriving. They mature quickly, resist pests, and withstand dry conditions—something critical with the current unpredictable rains,” he noted.
Chengo emphasized the importance of following guidance from agricultural officers to maximize yields and adopt best farming practices.

Francis Menza, a farmer from Malindi, also confirmed the effectiveness of the seed verification process.
“I scratched the KEPHIS sticker, sent the serial number, and received confirmation the seeds were genuine. They suit our region because they mature fast and tolerate drought,” he said.
Menza is among farmers who have benefited from the ongoing national promotion, winning farm inputs after verifying his purchase.
The rising adoption of DK777 reflects broader national efforts to promote certified, high-yielding seed varieties, support smallholder farmers, and strengthen resilience against climate shocks through private sector innovation.
For many farmers, climate-resilient seeds like DK777 are proving to be more than just a farming input—they are a pathway to food security, increased income, and stability in the face of changing weather patterns.
As adoption grows, the integration of technology, farmer education, and supportive policy continues to play a critical role in transforming rural livelihoods and strengthening Kenya’s food systems.
