A 24-year-old former Kwale Girls High School student is working as a house help despite attaining a B- grade in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), after repeated unsuccessful attempts to secure placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Mwanahamisi Mwateuzi Mwamare, from Mlafyeni Village in Mwaluphamba Location, Matuga Constituency, sat her KCSE examinations in 2024 with hopes of pursuing a career in nursing. However, financial hardship and failed placement applications have left her struggling to realize her dream.
Speaking in Likoni, where she currently works as a domestic worker, Mwanahamisi said her educational journey has been marked by immense challenges, particularly following the death of her father.
She revealed that her primary and secondary education were sponsored by the Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, a charitable organization that supported her due to her family’s extreme poverty.
Despite earning a university entry grade, Mwanahamisi says her efforts to secure admission into a Clinical Medicine course through KUCCPS have been unsuccessful. She has also applied for courses at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) without success.
“I have tried several times to apply for Clinical Medicine through KUCCPS and also for courses at KMTC, but my applications keep being rejected. I don’t know why,” she said.
According to Mwanahamisi, she first applied in 2025 but was unsuccessful. She made another attempt in 2026, only to face the same outcome.
Now employed as a house help in Likoni and earning Ksh5,000 per month, she remains determined to continue pursuing higher education and hopes to one day join Kibabii University to study nursing.
Mwanahamisi is appealing to well-wishers, education stakeholders, and relevant authorities to help her secure admission and financial support so that she can pursue her academic ambitions and build a better future.
