GenAfrica marks 30 years of investment stewardship, growth and market leadership

GenAfrica Asset Managers is celebrating 30 years of investment stewardship, marking a journey that has transformed the firm from a modest offshore fund manager into one of Africa’s leading investment institutions.

The milestone was commemorated during GenAfrica’s 9th Annual Investment Conference in Diani, Kwale County, where policymakers, financial experts, and investors gathered to discuss the future of wealth creation and investment across the continent.

Held under the theme “Bridging Tradition and Innovation: Broadening Horizons through Alternatives and Infrastructure Investments,” the conference highlighted the growing role of innovation, diversification, and alternative investments in shaping Africa’s financial future.

Over the past three decades, GenAfrica has grown from managing a single offshore client fund valued at USD 100 million to overseeing more than USD 6 billion in assets across pension and non-pension portfolios. The firm now serves more than 110 clients across the region.

Speaking at the conference, Chairperson of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors, Dr. David Ndii, described the anniversary as a significant milestone not only for the company but also for Kenya’s financial sector.

“Thirty years is a very important journey because GenAfrica is one of the pioneers. The industry was new and has evolved over the years, but the fact that GenAfrica has grown to manage assets worth up to KSh800 billion is a very significant achievement, not just for the company, but for us as a country,” said Dr. Ndii.

He noted that the company’s growth reflects the broader transformation of capital markets and pension systems across Africa.

GenAfrica Managing Director Patrick Kariuki said the anniversary represents both achievement and responsibility, particularly in safeguarding the financial futures of clients across generations.

“This is a reflection of the trust our clients have placed in us and our ability to evolve with changing markets while remaining true to our purpose. We are proud of the institution we have built and the impact we have had in helping clients achieve their financial goals,” said Kariuki.

He added that although the company’s mission has remained consistent over the years, investor expectations and financial markets continue to evolve.

“While our promise has remained the same for 30 years, the needs of investors continue to change. Our responsibility is to keep innovating and developing solutions that help more people participate in wealth creation and secure their financial futures,” he added.

Over the years, GenAfrica has strengthened its market position through product innovation and portfolio diversification.

Its investment offerings include the Batian Property Fund, Milele Income Drawdown Fund, Kivuli Umbrella Fund, and the GenAfrica Money Market Fund, which serves individuals, corporates, schools, SACCOs, religious institutions, and pension schemes.

The GenAfrica Money Market Fund, launched in December 2022, has experienced rapid growth, reflecting increasing investor confidence and rising participation in formal investment channels among retail investors.

As it celebrates three decades of growth, the firm says it remains focused on strengthening its market leadership, expanding its footprint across Africa, and developing innovative investment solutions aligned with emerging opportunities in infrastructure and alternative assets.

GenAfrica says its long-term commitment remains unchanged: delivering sustainable value, upholding strong governance, and helping clients build and preserve wealth across generations.
